The performing arts industry is part of the creative and cultural industries covering sectors such as theatre, musical theatre, dance, opera, puppetry, mime, carnival, street and circus arts as well as all the support functions and roles. Many individuals think the industry is just about actors, dancers and singers but it’s not, there is a wealth of other career options that contribute to the success of the industry.

The industry is very labour intensive and relies heavily on a skilled workforce; employing approximately 678,000 people of which 58% are self-employed; 40% of those working in performing arts have at least a level 4 qualification. 

Studying performing arts related subject can open the doors to a multitude of careers nationally or internationally, reflecting the diverse nature of the industry. Career opportunities may actor/actress, dancer, choreographer, musician, hair, makeup and wigs, props maker, puppeteer, rigger, sound technician, stage manager, studio manager, theatre director, wardrobe assistant and much more.
